Where Freedom Is Under Threat

China

Speech & Religion
Extreme

China operates one of the world's most sophisticated censorship systems, the 'Great Firewall.' Religious practice is heavily regulated — Christians, Muslims (Uyghurs), Tibetan Buddhists, and Falun Gong practitioners face systematic persecution. An estimated 1.5 million Uyghurs have been detained in 're-education camps.'

Examples
  • Social media posts critical of the government result in arrest
  • Churches must register with the state and accept Communist Party oversight
  • Uyghur Muslims face forced cultural and religious assimilation

Russia

Speech & Press
Severe

Russia has dramatically curtailed press freedom and political speech since 2022. Independent media has been shut down or forced into exile. Laws criminalize 'discrediting' the military or spreading 'false information' about government operations, with penalties of up to 15 years in prison.

Examples
  • Journalists face imprisonment for reporting on military operations
  • Social media posts questioning government policy result in criminal charges
  • Opposition political parties face legal harassment and bans

Iran

Religion & Speech
Extreme

Iran's theocratic government enforces strict religious law. Conversion from Islam is punishable by death. Christians, Baha'is, and other religious minorities face systematic persecution. Women who refuse to wear the hijab face arrest and imprisonment.

Examples
  • Apostasy from Islam carries the death penalty
  • Christian converts face imprisonment and torture
  • Journalists and bloggers are regularly imprisoned for criticism of the regime

North Korea

All Freedoms
Extreme

North Korea is ranked last in the world for press freedom by Reporters Without Borders. All media is state-controlled. Religion is effectively banned except for state-sanctioned worship of the Kim dynasty. Citizens caught with Bibles or foreign media face execution or labor camps.

Examples
  • Possession of a Bible can result in execution
  • All information is controlled by the state
  • Citizens are imprisoned for three generations for political crimes

Saudi Arabia

Religion & Speech
Severe

Saudi Arabia prohibits public worship by non-Muslims and bans the construction of non-Muslim religious buildings. Apostasy and blasphemy are punishable by death. Political dissent is criminalized, and journalists face imprisonment.

Examples
  • Public Christian worship is illegal
  • Criticism of the royal family or government is criminalized
  • Women's rights activists have been imprisoned for peaceful advocacy

Western Europe

Speech
Growing Concern

Several Western European democracies have enacted 'hate speech' laws that criminalize speech deemed offensive to religious or ethnic groups. While intended to protect minorities, these laws have been used to prosecute Christians for quoting Bible verses and to silence legitimate political debate.

Examples
  • Pastors in Sweden and Finland prosecuted for quoting Biblical passages on homosexuality
  • UK citizens arrested for social media posts expressing political opinions
  • France's blasphemy-adjacent laws used to restrict religious expression

Canada

Speech & Religion
Growing Concern

Canada's Bill C-16 and various provincial human rights codes have been used to compel speech and restrict religious expression. Pastors have faced legal action for preaching traditional religious views. The government has proposed internet regulation bills that would restrict online speech.

Examples
  • Pastors have faced human rights complaints for preaching traditional doctrine
  • Government proposed legislation to regulate online speech
  • Religious adoption agencies forced to close for following faith-based policies

United States

Internal Threats
Vigilance Required

While the First Amendment remains the world's strongest protection for speech and religion, internal threats have emerged. The ACLU and similar organizations use litigation to remove religious expression from public life. Social media platforms suppress certain viewpoints. Government agencies have been found to pressure platforms to censor speech.

Examples
  • Lawsuits to remove religious symbols from public spaces
  • Government pressure on social media companies to suppress speech
  • Religious business owners forced to violate their beliefs or face legal penalties
Why It Matters Here

The First Amendment: The World's Greatest Protection

The United States Constitution, and specifically the First Amendment, stands as the world's most powerful legal protection for freedom of speech and religion. No other document in human history has so effectively constrained government power and protected individual liberty.

But the First Amendment is only as strong as the people who defend it. When courts reinterpret it, when government agencies pressure private companies to censor speech, when religious expression is driven from the public square — the protections erode.

The Constitutional Freedom Foundation exists to ensure that what is happening in China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea does not happen here. We defend the Constitution in the courts, in the public square, and in the hearts and minds of every American citizen.
